As the unemployment rate spiked at 9.7% in February, many Americans are finding themselves needing to make major reductions in their financial budget to deal with the loss of income. Let’s face it, many Americans are currently living paycheck to paycheck just to keep up with their bills and still provide food on the table. For them to have to take a lower paying job or live off of unemployment benefits could greatly effect their way of life.

Most consumers in today’s age being effected by our nation’s economic crisis still have a better chance of getting through these rough times than they may think. It’s simply a matter of knowing what the difference is between necessity and luxury.

With the technological advances made during the last 10 years most people don’t even remember life as it was without things like cell phones, DVR, and satellite radio. It’s almost as if they are becoming a necessity, but in reality if you had to do without them you would still be just fine. It is possible to cut hundreds of dollars off of your monthly budget by taking a step back, and learning to live life a little simpler.

It is something to keep in mind for all of the consumers out there who are at risk of loosing their home because they are behind on their payments. Before further damaging your credit and making it nearly impossible to buy another home for many years to come, stop and think about what luxuries in life that you can live without and you might find that you can still afford your home, and maybe even still have a few extra dollars to spend at the end of the month.

If you were to type in the words “credit repair” in any major search engine on the internet you had better prepare yourself to be bombarded by companies who claim they can increase your credit score for a fee. On Google alone there comes up with 7,580,000 results for credit repair. Although according to an article published on the Federal Trade Commission’s website the best way for someone to repair their credit and improve their credit rating is to simply do it themselves.

Unfortunately many consumers are being misinformed about the best way to go about receiving their credit reports. It appears that almost all companies that offer people access to their credit reports require you to sign up or pay for their services before you can view you credit reports. Because of all of the advertising and marketing that these companies put into the mainstream media most consumers sign right up without taking the time to learn their rights that were created by The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

Certain laws were created to protect consumers by giving them the rights to be able to see the information being reported about their credit by the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. By spending some time researching these laws and how the credit bureaus work you could teach yourself how to view, and repair your credit reports.

Some credit websites offer proven methods that consumers can use to improve their credit like correcting inaccurate information being reported on your credit reports and negotiation with collection agencies to remove negative items showing on your credit. Not to mention the amount of money you will save if you are currently enrolled in a credit monitoring or repair service. These kinds of services usually go for at least $20 a month giving you a possible savings of $240 a year by doing it yourself.

By learning how to manage your own credit you will also help to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft. Identity theft is currently one of the fastest growing crimes across the world and anyone who is not aware of what is being reported on their credit reports is more at risk to having their identity stolen. Some credit guides will also give you tips on what to look out for when monitoring your credit reports.

I was watching TV with my wife last night when we saw an advertisement for one of the many debt settlement companies out there. Only this one said something that really caught my attention. They said that your credit score will rapidly increase by joining their program.

Unfortunately most people aren’t aware of how false that statement was and I’m sure they had people calling in to sign up with the hopes that their score will start to go up immediately. Please understand that any kind of debt settlement program you sign up for will have very adverse affects on your credit score. It’s almost as damaging to your credit as filing for bankruptcy is.

While the American economy is suffering tremendously from the damage that has been done to our housing market, a lot of companies are now trying to profit off of other peoples misfortunes more than ever. One of the many outcomes of the high mortgage foreclosure rate is the fact that many peoples’ credit has been severely damaged. This is where some very shady, so-called, businesses come into play.

There have always been places that you could turn to that could help you to repair your credit or negotiate your debts in the past. But recently this industry has exploded into a mainstream market where companies are competing against each other in a race against time to see who can find the most people out there who are currently going through financial difficulties. Now there tends to be an increasing amount of companies charging people money for services they can’t come through with and it can be very difficult to get your money back once it’s gone.

By researching and knowing our rights regarding our credit and how it works, the chances are good that you could probably avoid these companies all together. Anybody with a social security number has the right to know what is showing on their credit reports and you don’t have to pay anybody to do it for you. A lot of businesses say they will give you a free credit report if you sign up for their monthly services but then is it really free?

On the other hand there are also a lot of good recourses out there where you can learn how to view your own credit reports and repair your credit without paying a single thing. Just remember when searching for these recourses that if you are being asked for a credit card or checking account number it probably eventually is going to cost you money.

It seems like it should be so common of a thing, that everyone should know. And yet there are still so many people who don’t know that they have a right to view copies of all three of their credit reports for free once a year. What a majority of people end up doing is typing in “Free Credit Report” into any web browser and see the site called “FreeCreditReport.com”. There you can see your credit reports, only after agreeing to sign up for their credit monitoring services.

Please, please, please!!! If all you are looking for is your credit reports and nothing else than all you have to do is visit www.annualcreditreport.com. This is a website that was created by the credit bureaus and is currently the only place you can go to get access to all three of your credit reports without having to pay anything for it. But beware! All this site does is direct you to each of the major credit bureaus’ websites where you will be offerred all kinds of services on top of ordering your free credit report. Just remember that if you are being asked for a debit/credit card number then you have selected to purchase one of these services and you should go back to make sure you are only getting your free credit report.
